Let’s talk about Aftercare!
Aftercare Program
Aftercare is a short-term program intended to provide you with a safety net. Services are designed to help young adults transition to either independence or to another program like Extended Foster Care or PESS.
To be part of this program, two things need to happen:
1. You have to have been in licensed foster care or the custody of the department when you turned 18 and you haven’t turned 23 yet.
AND
2. You're not in Extended Foster Care (EFC) or Postsecondary Education Services and Support (PESS). Aftercare is like a bridge between those programs, and it's meant to help you transition to adulthood successfully or get back into EFC or PESS.
Now, here's what Aftercare Services might include:
- Mentoring: Someone to guide and support you.
- Tutoring: Extra help with your studies.
- Mental Health: Support for your emotional well-being.
- Substance Abuse Counseling: If you need help with drug addiction or misuse.
- Parenting Classes: Advice and support if you have kids.
- Job and Career Skills Training: To prepare you for work.
- Temporary Financial Assistance: If you need help with essential stuff like food and rent.
- Daycare referrals for your children.
- Financial Assistance for extracurricular activities (sports, band, etc) while in high school or college.
- Emergency Financial Assistance: To support young adults in the PESS program with assistance with things such as car repairs and medical bills not covered by insurance.
